The following is a guide to help you with the college recruiting process. Keep in mind that these are just some of the many things to consider when working through the process of being recruited. Finally, remember that scholarship money can come in the form of academic money as well as athletic money depending on a number of factors.
Checklist:
- Register and take ACT or SAT.
- Register with the NCAA Clearinghouse if you have not done so already (Required for division 1 and 2 only).
- Complete athletic resume.
- Highlight all of your accomplishments athletically (personal and team accomplishments), and academically (grades, class rank, awards, clubs, etc.).
- Other sports accomplishments.
- References, High school coach, club coach, important school or community leaders.
- Letters of recommendation from coaches, teachers, important school and community leaders.
- Your goals both athletically and academically.
- Keep in mind your academics are more important than ever. Don't get left out because you did not take care of business in the classroom. Before a coach can truly recruit you, they will need to see an academic transcript. Get copies from your guidance office to send with your athletic resume and film.
- Make a Game/ Training Highlight Tape.
- Use highlights from several games (keepers, in addition can use intense training sessions to highlight solid technique).
- Show close-ups and wide angled shots, coach's want to see both what you can do on the ball and how you move in the flow of the game.
- Have someone who can critically analyze it look at it before you send it out. Sending out a tape with incorrect technique, and poor choices will have a negative effect on what you are trying to accomplish.
- Complete your list of possible schools and then narrow the list.
- What schools offer your area of academic interest, most important!
- Strength of school and academic program.
- Are you interested in a large university, small college or something in between?
- How far do you want to be from home?
- $$$What academic money is available based on your grades, class rank, community service, faith, etc.
- Get your name out!
- Send out resumes and highlight film.
- Contact coaching staff set-up official or un-official visit.
- Stay in contact through phone and e-mail (texting is not allowed).
